An Open Letter to the Leaders and Supporters of the Newport WA Seventh-day Adventist Church,

This is a response to the Leaders of the Newport Washington Church and those who support their position and decisions stated in their letter titled The Controversy In Newport  Over the Teachings of Jeff Pippenger dated February 2012.  The goal of this response is to compare the Bible and Spirit of Prophecy what is affirmed in the letter and the issues they have against the teachings of Brother Jeff Pippenger.

For the sake of brevity and in harmony with the Spirit of Prophecy the leadership of the Newport Washington Seventh-day Adventist Church will from here on be referred to as the stars.

The teachings that the stars ascribe to Brother Jeff Pippenger are actually the messages that were taught by William Miller and his associates during the Advent movement of 1840-1844.  In the following inspired quotes God’s prophet informs His people 1.) who taught William Miller, 2.) what he was taught and 3.) the result of the messages.

Angels of God repeatedly visited that chosen one, to guide his mind and open to his understanding prophecies which had ever been dark to God’s people. The commencement of the chain of truth was given to him, and he was led on to search for link after link, until he looked with wonder and admiration upon the Word of God. He saw there a perfect chain of truth.”

The first and second messages were given in 1843 and 1844, and we are now under the proclamation of the third; but all three of the messages are still to be proclaimed. It is just as essential now as ever before that they shall be repeated to those who are seeking for the truth. By pen and voice we are to sound the proclamation, showing their order, and the application of the prophecies that bring us to the third angel’s message. There cannot be a third without the first and second. These messages we are to give to the world in publications, in discourses, showing in the line of prophetic history the things that have been and the things that will be.”  {2SM 104.3}

The Advent movement of 1840-44 was a glorious manifestation of the power of God; the first angel’s message was carried to every missionary station in the world, and in some countries there was the greatest religious interest which has been witnessed in any land since the Reformation of the sixteenth century; but these are to be far exceeded by the mighty movement under the last warning of the third angel.”  {GC88 610.3}

Any faithful Berean, who has investigated what Brother Pippenger is teaching, knows that he is teaching the same truths that William Miller taught during the Advent movement when the glorious manifestation of the power of God was revealed.  By pen and voice he is sounding the proclamation of the three angel’s messages, showing their order, and “the application of the prophecies that bring us to the third angel’s message.”  If this old light is accepted the heart will be prepared to receive new light which will lead toward that “mighty movement under the last warning of the third angel”that will far exceed the “glorious manifestation of the power of God” that was manifested in the beginning of the Advent movement of 1840-1844.  As we move towards home the light gets brighter and brighter!

The time period that William Miller taught these sacred truths, the first and second angel’s message is properly called the Advent Movement, not “The Jeff Pippenger Movement.”  By denouncing “the application of the prophecies that bring us to the third angel’s message” and labeling Brother Pippenger’s efforts to teach those truths as “the Jeff Pippenger Movement” the stars have set the stage to deceive the unwary, but the faithful Bereans will not be deceived.

The stars quoted from 1 SM 159 and 1 SM 87 but their interpretation removes these inspired words from the setting of truth.  Old truths may look like new light to those who have lost sight of them and in our Laodicean condition there is not one of us who have not at some time in our experience lost sight of the precious gems of old truth that were laid in the foundation by our pioneers.  And before new light is given the old must be recovered.  God is in the process of restoring old light and opening new light to His children who are seeking Him!  Laodicea is either heeding the counsel to buy from the faithful and true Witness His gold, His white raiment and His eyesalve or Laodicea is rejecting His light and continues to think that they are “rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing”!

By taking the gems of light out of their setting of truth the stars have “concluded that ‘the enemy’ has indeed been ‘at work’ to ‘divide’” their “local church.”  The enemy does not divide by restoring old truth but he does work by leading his agents in the church to reject it!

The prophetic truths that God led William Miller to understand brought unity to His children that were scattered in many different denominations.  They were gathered together on the platform of Truth, the only platform that can bring true unity because Jesus is the foundation of all Truth and He never changes!

Following are three things that the stars affirm and four issues that they have with the teachings of the Advent Movement of 1840-44 which they erroneously call “The Jeff Pippenger Movement.”

What the stars Affirm:

1.      Our confidence that God led William Miller

2.      Our confidence in the spirit of prophecy

3.      Light was given by His Spirit that there must be order and thorough discipline in the church

Four Issues:

1.      The pioneer view of “the daily”

2.      The idea that probation closes for Seventh-day Adventists at the Sunday Law

3.      The idea that a “2520 year prophecy” exists in Leviticus 26

4.      Rejection of legitimate church authority

The stars profess to have “confidence that God led William Miller” and that they “have not taken a position stating that the pioneer view is wrong” regarding the daily and that they have no “burden to oppose those who think they were right.”

What did God lead William Miller to understand “the daily” to be?  William Miller answers this question himself in the following quote taken from The Second Advent Manual by Apollos Hale.  It’s rather lengthy but it addresses two of the four issues, the daily and the 2520 year prophecy, which will be addressed later.

“’During, the twelve years I was a deist, I read all histories I could find; but now I loved the Bible It taught of Jesus! But still there was a good deal of the Bible that was dark to me. In 1818 or 19, while conversing with a friend! To whom I made a visit, and who had known and heard me talk while I was a deist, he inquired, in rather a significant manner, ‘What do you think of this text, and that?’ referring to the old texts I objected to while a deist. I understood what he was about, and replied-If you will give me time, I will tell you what they mean. ‘How long time do you want?’ I don’t know, but I will tell you, I replied, for I could not believe that God had given a revelation that could not be understood.  I then resolved to study my Bible, believing I could find out what the Holy Spirit meant. But as soon as I had formed this resolution the thought came to me-’Suppose you find a passage that you cannot understand, what will you do?’ This mode of studying the Bible then came to my mind:-I will take the words of such passages, and trace them through the Bible, and find out their meaning in this way. I had Cruden’s Concordance, which I think is the best in the world; so I took that and my Bible, and set down to my desk, and read nothing else, except the newspapers a little, for I was determined to know what my Bible meant. I began at Genesis, and read on slowly; and when I came to a text that I could could [sic] not understand, I searched through the Bible to find out what it meant. After I had gone through the Bible in this way, O, how bright and glorious the truth appeared! I found what I have been preaching to you. I was satisfied that the seven times terminated in 1843. Then I came to the 2300 days; they brought me to the same conclusion; but I had no thought of finding out when the Saviour was coming, and I could not believe it; but the light struck me so forcibly I did not know what to do. Now, I thought, I must put on spurs and breeching; I will not go faster than the Bible, and I will not fall behind it. Whatever the Bible teaches, I will hold on to it. But still there were some texts that I could not understand.’

“So much for his general mode of studying the Bible. On another occasion he stated his mode of settling the meaning of the text before us-the meaning of ‘the daily.’ ‘I read on,’ said he, ‘And could find no other case in which it was found, but in Daniel. I then took those words which stood in connection with it, ‘take away.’ He shall take away the daily, ‘from the time the daily shall be taken away,’ etc. I read on, and thought I should find no light on the text; finally I came to 2 Thess. ii. 7, 8. ‘For the mystery of iniquity doth already work, only he who now letteth, will let, until he be taken out of the way, and then shall that wicked be revealed,’ etc. And when I had come to that text, O, how clear and glorious the truth appeared! There it is! that is ‘the daily!’ Well, now, what does Paul mean by ‘he who now letteth,’ or hindereth? By ‘the man of sin,’ and ‘the wicked,’ Popery is meant. Well, what is it which hinders Popery from being revealed? Why, it is Paganism; well, then, ‘the daily’ must mean Paganism.” {1843 ApH, TSAM 65-66}

William Miller was led by God to understand that “the daily” represented paganism an agent of Satan, a satanic power.  This truth that God taught to William Miller is also being taught by Brother Pippenger and others who have embraced this old gem of truth.

The stars say that they have no burden to oppose those who think that the pioneers were right but their actions speak louder than their words!  How can they have confidence that God led William Miller and oppose those who are teaching what he taught?  They say that what they oppose is the position that this is “part of a Latter Rain, Present Truth, Life or Death Message from God.”   “The daily” was part of the truths revealed during the Advent movement of 1840-1844 when the 1st and 2nd angels’ messages were attended by the “glorious manifestation of the power of God”.  The 1st and 2nd angels’ messages are to be repeated and if it was part of the message and present truth when the former rain fell it will continue to be present truth and part of the message when the latter rain falls!  Is it a life and death matter?  God brings light, old and new, to dispel the darkness but if the soul rejects the old he has placed himself in a position that he is unable to receive the new and that soul will be lost!  God winks at ignorance but not willing ignorance!

The concern regarding the confusion that has been brought into the church regarding “the daily” is truly a valid point.  There are statements from the Spirit of Prophecy being quoted to support both sides of the “daily” issue.  When studied the way inspiration is to be studied, comparing one with another and in the setting of truth, all will harmonize.  So let’s put the gems of inspiration in their proper setting and compare them with other established truth.  First let’s read the statement where Sister White endorses the correct view of  “the daily.”

“Then I saw in relation to the ‘Daily,’ that the word ‘sacrifice’ was supplied by man’s wisdom, and does not belong to the text; and that the Lord gave the correct view of it to those who gave the judgment hour cry. When union existed, before 1844, nearly all were united on the correct view of the “Daily;” but since 1844, in the confusion, other views have been embraced, and darkness and confusion have followed.”   {ExV 61.2}

The subject of this paragraph is “the daily” and God tells us through His prophet that He gave the correct view of it, “the daily”, to those who gave the judgment hour cry.  But then He tells us that since 1844 other views have been embraced bringing darkness and confusion!  Who were responsible for turning God’s truth into a lie?  In the following quote, written in 1910, “the daily” is being addressed.

“And there was Brother Daniells, whose mind the enemy was working; and your mind and Elder Prescott’s mind were being worked by the angels that were expelled from heaven. Satan’s work was to divert your minds that jots and tittles should be brought in which the Lord did not inspire you to bring in. They were not essential. But this meant much to the cause of truth. And the ideas of your minds, if you could be drawn away to jots or tittles, is a work of Satan’s devising. To correct little things in the books written, you suppose would be doing a great work. But I am charged, Silence is eloquence.  {20MR 17.1}

Notice that it meant much to the cause of truth that these leaders in the church were bringing in jots and tittles that were a work of Satan’s devising!  Later on in the same letter God through His prophet says:

“And I was shown from the first that the Lord had given neither Elders Daniells nor Prescott the burden of this work. Should Satan’s wiles be brought in, should this “Daily” be such a great matter as to be brought in to confuse minds and hinder the advancement of the work at this important period of time? It should not, whatever may be. This subject should not be introduced, for the spirit that would be brought in would be forbidding, and Lucifer is watching every movement. Satanic agencies would commence his work and there would be confusion brought into our ranks.

Satan was working the minds of Daniells and Prescott, leaders in the organized Seventh-day Adventist Church to bring in their ideas regarding “the daily”.  Their ideas are stilled held by leaders in the organized Seventh-day Adventist Church today and they are contrary to the truth that God had revealed to William Miller!  In the next reference that the stars at Newport quoted, the past tense of the verbs indicate that Satan accomplished his work!

“I have words to speak to . . . all who have been active in urging their views in regard to the meaning of ‘the daily’ of Daniel 8. This is not to be made a test question, and the agitation that has resulted from its being treated as such has been very unfortunate. Confusion has resulted, and the minds of some of our brethren have been diverted from the thoughtful consideration that should have been given to the work that the Lord has directed should be done at this time in our cities. This has been pleasing to the great enemy of our work.  {1SM 167.1}

Today God is restoring old truths that have been lost in the confusion and darkness that had resulted from Satan’s work.  Some, including Brother Pippenger, are accepting the light of old truth, others are fighting against it.

If the stars truly believed the Spirit of Prophecy as they claim, why would they say that they “have not taken a position stating that the pioneer view is wrong,” but then defend their actions of inquisition by quoting a statement addressed at a time when confusion had already been brought in by leaders whose mind Satan was working?  If the larger issue is the confusion that has resulted from errors that have been brought in then going back to the faith where unity existed is the solution!  Who is seeking for true unity at the Newport Washington Seventh-day Adventist church, the stars who are following the footsteps of past leaders whose minds were controlled by Satan or the humble flock that are seeking to return to and teach the truths that united God’s people during the Millerite movement?

And again if you truly believed the Spirit of Prophecy as you claim why would you say that you do not “have any burden to oppose those who think they were right.  Nor will you ever forbid honest belief and inquiry either way” and then seek to disfellowship those who you admit, “have been earnestly (and sincerely) presenting to your members” these views?   To say one thing and do another is hypocrisy!

Is it a life and death matter?

“Each may have heaven’s light to guide him. If we discern the truth, and obey it, our whole course of action will be in accordance with the truth; for the truth sanctifies the receiver. But if men refuse to search for the truth as for hidden treasure, if the mind is pleased with the theories of error, the soul will remain in darkness. The course of the life, the development of the character, will be corrupted by false sentiments. Error never sanctifies. It can do no good. {RH, August 23, 1898 par. 2}

Those who refuse to search for the truth as for hidden treasure, those whose minds are pleased with the theories of error will remain in darkness and will never be in unity with God’s people who are being sanctified by truth!  As the stars at  Newport you say that you refuse to allow Satan to triumph in your church but while you are speaking out of both sides of your mouth at the same time he more subtly continues the work he began in the minds of Daniells and Prescott!

“A double minded man [is] unstable in all his ways.”  James 1:8

Your confidence “in the Spirit of Prophecy regarding:

Issue #2  “The idea that probation closes for Seventh-day Adventists at the Sunday Law”

The stars quoted a statement from 5 T, “The time is not far distant when the test will come to every soul. The mark of the beast will be urged upon us.” By taking this warning out of its setting of truth the stars have again tried to convince the unwary that probation does not close for Seventh-day Adventists at the Sunday Law.  The whole paragraph will put it back in its proper setting and prove just the opposite of what they said.

“The time is not far distant when the test will come to every soul. The mark of the beast will be urged upon us. Those who have step by step yielded to worldly demands and conformed to worldly customs will not find it a hard matter to yield to the powers that be, rather than subject themselves to derision, insult, threatened imprisonment, and death. The contest is between the commandments of God and the commandments of men. In this time the gold will be separated from the dross in the church. True godliness will be clearly distinguished from the appearance and tinsel of it. Many a star that we have admired for its brilliancy will then go out in darkness.  Chaff like a cloud will be borne away on the wind, even from places where we see only floors of rich wheat. All who assume the ornaments of the sanctuary, but are not clothed with Christ’s righteousness, will appear in the shame of their own nakedness.  {5T 81.1}

Who is the prophet referring to that are yielding to worldly demands?  The world or those in the church who are of the world?  The gold is separated from the dross in the church!  Who are the stars that go out in darkness?  Who are the ones that assume the ornaments of the sanctuary?  The whole context of the above paragraph is the professed Seventh-day Adventist Church!

Oh, that the people might know the time of their visitation! There are many who have not yet heard the testing truth for this time. There are many with whom the Spirit of God is striving. The time of God’s destructive judgments is the time of mercy for those who have had no opportunity to learn what is truth. Tenderly will the Lord look upon them. His heart of mercy is touched; His hand is still stretched out to save, while the door is closed to those who would not enter.”  {9T 97.2}

The stars of the Newport Washington Seventh-day Adventist Church say that Sister White disagrees that probation closes on Seventh-day Adventists at the Sunday Law.  Then who is she referring to when she says that “the door is shut to those who would not enter” but “His hand is still stretched out to save” “many who have not yet heard the testing truth for this time”?   Have Seventh-day Adventists had the opportunities to learn what is truth?  Where does Sister White say that the door will be open to them again?   Where does she say that they will be given an opportunity to take the final test again?

The stars of the Newport church say that “in school, a test comes first, then performance, and then a grade is given.”  This is exactly what Brother Pippenger is teaching, the test, the Sunday Law is first enforced, and then Seventh-day Adventists, those who have had the opportunity to know the truth and prepare for the test, perform, they must choose their answer, and they either choose to obey the Sunday Law or they choose to obey the commandments of God.  The character that they have developed will determine the choice they make and then they receive their grade, the mark of the beast or the seal of God!  There is only one final test and once the grade is given there are no more opportunities to take the test again! In other words probation is closed!

Do those who are seeking for righteousness know that probation closes for Seventh-day Adventists first?  Yes, because they believe in the Bible and the Spirit of Prophecy.  They do not know the day nor the hour when probation closes but they do know that when the Sunday Law does arrive Seventh-day Adventists will take their test and receive their final grade while the door of mercy will still be open for the world.  Notice the context of the three statements that the stars of Newport quoted: (their ellipsis is in salmon color)

“When the third angel’s message closes, mercy no longer pleads for the guilty inhabitants of the earth. The people of God have accomplished their work. They have received ‘the latter rain,’ ‘the refreshing from the presence of the Lord,’ and they are prepared for the trying hour before them. Angels are hastening to and fro in heaven. An angel returning from the earth announces that his work is done; the final test has been brought upon the world, and all who have proved themselves loyal to the divine precepts have received ‘the seal of the living God.’ Then Jesus ceases His intercession in the sanctuary above. He lifts His hands and with a loud voice says, “It is done;” and all the angelic host lay off their crowns as He makes the solemn announcement: “He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still.” Revelation 22:11. Every case has been decided for life or death.”  {GC 613.2}

The church and the world are two different entities.  Jesus does not “cease His intercession in the sanctuary above” while mercy lingers for the world “those who have had no opportunity to learn what is truth. Tenderly will the Lord look upon them. His heart of mercy is touched; His hand is still stretched out to save, while the door is closed to those who would not enter.”  {9T 97.2}  Who will teach them?  Those Seventh-day Adventists those who have passed the test and received the Seal of God!  Prior to the Sunday Law the Latter Rain had been sprinkling upon them but now that they are sealed the Latter Rain is poured upon them without measure and God’s people accomplish their work of teaching the world truth!  When “the final test has been brought upon the world, … Then Jesus ceases His intercession in the sanctuary above.… Every case has been decided for life or death.”

Those who are seeking for righteousness do know that probation closes first for the Seventh-day Adventist Church when the Sunday Law arrives and they must take their final test!  However, they do not know when it will come, but they do know that it is the very next prophetic move of the papacy!

And knowing that probation closes for Seventh-day Adventists before it closes for the rest of the world does not mean that they know the hour when “the final, irrevocable decision has been pronounced in the sanctuary above”, the time when probation closes for the world.  Brother Pippenger and those who believe the truths that he is teaching are not “searching the Scriptures in order to ascertain, if possible, when probation will close” but they are “ searching the Scriptures in order to” find the truth that will sanctify them and prepare them to receive the seal of God when the Sunday Law does arrive!

Your confidence  “in the Spirit of Prophecy” and “that God led William Miller” regarding Point #3 that the “2520 year prophecy’ exists in Leviticus 26”:

The stars of the Newport Church acknowledge that

ñ     the Millerites believed in the 2520 prophecy

ñ     the 2520 prophecy was part of both the 1843 and 1850 charts used by the Millerites

ñ     Ellen White plainly said that these charts were directed by the Lord

“Yet we also know” they say:

ñ     post-1844 “Adventists” who became “Seventh-day Adventists” laid aside some ideas as unbiblical

ñ     post-1844 “Adventists” who became “Seventh-day Adventists” accepted new ideas that in 1844 they did not hold such as the Sabbath, the heavenly sanctuary and the non-immortality of the soul

It is good that the leadership at Newport Church acknowledges all these truths.  However, laying aside non-biblical truths does not give any one license to lay aside established Biblical truth, truth which the hand of the Lord directed!!

The stars of the Newport Washington Seventh-day Adventist Church and those who affirm their position say that James White was given a commission,  to create two new charts that reflected the “church’s advancing views”!  And then “in his official capacity as Review editor” published an article that denies “any prophetic period brought to view at all in Leviticus xxvi”!

What did God direct His “chosen one”, William Miller, to understand?

“I was satisfied that the seven times terminated in 1843. Then I came to the 2300 days; they brought me to the same conclusion; ….” {1843 ApH, TSAM 65-66}

God’s angels opened to the mind of  William Miller the perfect chain of prophetic truth, including the commencement of that chain, the seven times, found in the upper right hand column of the 1843 chart complete with Bible reference of Leviticus 26:28-34.  Notice two things: first he says, “the seven times terminated in 1843”!  If it had an ending it had to have had a beginning, how could it not be a time prophecy?  And second, after he understood the 2520 year prophecy then he came to the 2300 day prophecy which brought him to the same conclusion.  In other words, he understood that both prophecies ended in 1843.

What does the Spirit of Prophecy say regarding the 1843 chart?

“I have seen that the 1843 chart was directed by the hand of the Lord, and that it should not be altered; that the figures were as He wanted them; that His hand was over and hid a mistake in some of the figures, so that none could see it, until His hand was removed.”  {ExV 61.1}

“The warning has come: Nothing is to be allowed to come in that will disturb the foundation of the faith upon which we have been building ever since the message came in 1842, 1843, and 1844. I was in this message, and ever since I have been standing before the world, true to the light that God has given us. We do not propose to take our feet off the platform on which they were placed as day by day we sought the Lord with earnest prayer, seeking for light. Do you think that I could give up the light that God has given me? It is to be as the Rock of Ages. It has been guiding me ever since it was given.

The light given in the messages to those who sought the Lord prior to 1844 is to be as the Rock of Ages!  Why?  Because it was directed by the hand of the Lord and He says, “I am the LORD, I change not”!

When the “official” watchmen think that because of the “church’s advancing views” they have the right to delete or change established truth then God’s flock would do well to heed the waring of Isaiah regarding God’s professed watchmen:

His watchmen [are] blind: they are all ignorant, they [are] all dumb dogs, they cannot bark; sleeping, lying down, loving to slumber11Yea, [they are] greedy dogs [which] can never have enough, and they [are] shepherds [that] cannot understand: they all look to their own way, every one for his gain, from his quarter.  12Come ye, [say they], I will fetch wine, and we will fill ourselves with strong drink; and to morrow shall be as this day, [and] much more abundant.”  Isaiah 56:10-12

“they also have erred through wine, and through strong drink are out of the way; the priest and the prophet have erred through strong drink, they are swallowed up of wine, they are out of the way through strong drink; they err in vision, they stumble [in] judgment.  8For all tables are full of vomit [and] filthiness, [so that there is] no place [clean].”  Isaiah 28:7-8

James White accomplished his assigned, truth forsaking, goal by denying the commencement of the perfect chain of prophetic truth, the 2520 year prophecy found in Leviticus 26.

The stars of the Newport Washington Seventh-day Adventist Church and those who affirm their position may think there is deep significance in Ellen White’s silence regarding the “church’s advancing views” that deny established truth that was directed by the hand of God, but there is a deeper significance in their support and justification of blatant disobedience in altering the chart and taking away the key that  unlocked the 2300 day prophecy!

Revelation 22:18-19

“For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book:  19And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and [from] the things which are written in this book.”

Is it a life an death matter?

The Seven Church Quotes:

The inspired statements that the stars call “The Seven Church Quotes” are excellent counsel to God’s church and the context of the last one especially “nails the thesis to the door”!

“I saw that if God’s people in Wisconsin would prosper, they must take a decided position in regard to these things, and thereby cut off the influence of those who are causing distraction and division by teaching sentiments contrary to the body. Such are wandering stars. They seem to emit a little light; they profess and carry along a little truth, and thus deceive the inexperienced. Satan endows them with his spirit, but God is not with them; His Spirit does not dwell in them. Jesus prayed that His disciples might be one, as He is one with the Father, “that the world may believe that Thou hast sent Me.” The oneness and unity of God’s truth-believing remnant people carries powerful conviction to the world that they have the truth, and are the peculiar, chosen people of God. This oneness and unity disconcerts the enemy, and he is determined that it shall not exist. The present truth, believed in the heart and exemplified in the life, makes God’s people one, and gives them a powerful influence.”  {1T 327.1}

The paragraph above is found in chapter 65 of 1T and there are two paragraphs preceding it.  The first one sets the stage and identifies the things that the people of God needed to take a decided position on.  And what were these things?  It was  Satan’s agents in the church, “individuals professing to believe a part of present truth, while they were warring against a part.”  And the decided position that God’s people were to take was that the influence of Satan’s agents should be cut off!

In the second paragraph Sister White uses language that brings to the mind the experience of William Miller.

“Honest souls will see the straight chain of present truth. They will see its harmonious connections, link after link uniting into a great whole, and will lay hold upon it. The present truth is not difficult to be understood, and the people whom God is leading will be united upon this broad, firm platform.”  {1T 326.2}

This is the same perfect chain of truth that God led William Miller “to search for link after link.”  How blessed the Newport Washington Seventh-day Adventist Church is to have among them those whom God is leading to discover the gems in the perfect chain of prophetic truth!  And how solemn the consequence of the action the stars are about to take in trying to cut off the influence of these faithful servants of God!

The capstone is beautifully set in the next paragraph when inspiration addresses “God’s truth-believing remnant people” and says,

“The oneness and unity of God’s truth-believing remnant people carries powerful conviction to the world that they have the truth, and are the peculiar, chosen people of God. This oneness and unity disconcerts the enemy, and he is determined that it shall not exist. The present truth, believed in the heart and exemplified in the life, makes God’s people one, and gives them a powerful influence.”  {1T 327.1}

Who are “God’s truth-believing remnant” in the Newport Washington Seventh-day Adventist church? Those honest souls who see the straight perfect chain of truth that God opened to the mind of  William Miller, His “chosen one”?  Or those who profess to believe part of present truth but have accepted the teaching of men “whose mind the enemy was working” and are now warring against the very first link in the perfect chain of Truth?

The true remnant will believe and lift up the truths that God gave in the beginning!  Satan’s agents profess “to believe a part of present truth, while they” are “warring against another part.”

One other important question that needs to be answered by inspiration, “Who is the church?”

From the beginning, faithful souls have constituted the church on earth. In every age the Lord has had His watchmen, who have borne a faithful testimony to the generation in which they lived.”  {AA 11.2}

God has a church. It is not the great cathedral, neither is it the national establishment, neither is it the various denominations; it is the people who love God and keep His commandments. “Where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them” (Matt. 18:20). Where Christ is even among the humble few, this is Christ’s church, for the presence of the High and Holy One who inhabiteth eternity can alone constitute a church.”  {UL 315.5}

The stars of the Newport Washington Seventh-day Adventist Church and those who side with their “high handed” position presented in their official church letter would do well to prayerfully consider the following words from inspiration.

“The men who have been connected with the greatest interest upon this earth have tainted and corrupted the work of God. The instrumentalities which He designs shall be used in advancing His cause have been used to forward unlawful schemes, which are in direct opposition to the work which God has specified as His. God has been forsaken by the men who have voiced decisions regarding His work, which has thereby become entangled. Men have seemed determined to place the mold and superscription of their human wisdom upon the work of God. They refused to be worked by the Holy Spirit, and brought in their own wisdom and devising.  {17MR 185.2}

The result of this has been in various ways. The sacred character of the cause of God is no longer realized at the center of the work. The voice from Battle Creek, which has been regarded as authority in counseling how the work should be done, is no longer the voice of God; but it is the voice of–whom? From whence does it come, and where is its vital power? This state of things is maintained by men who should have been disconnected from the work long ago. These men do not scruple to quote the word of God as their authority, but the god who is leading them is a false god.  {17MR 185.3}

Men who have tainted and corrupted the work of God, men through whom the enemy continues to work may think that because they have prayed, shed tears and exchanged hugs that their actions are not in harmony with Annas or Caiaphas because they didn’t pray with Jesus or Peter but is your love that unfeigned love that we are to have for our brothers and sisters or is it “a weak sentimentalism, making little distinction between good and evil”?

Truth directed by the hand of the Lord will unite God’s people and that same truth will separate the wheat from the tares!

Sincerely contending for the faith that was once delivered to the saints,

    If our leaders would except millers 14 rules of interpretation of the bible then there would
    be no surface reading and jumping to conclusions like the Newport church has and many others. I follow truth, not Pippenger or the messenger, but i will defend truth
    whether it comes from Pippenger or anyone else that teaches the original faith.
    The issue is truth not pippenger .The Newport church has coveniantly put truth in a box by
    saying ”the Pippenger movment” Thank you Peggy Nixon for willing to be used of God to share the original faith with the Newport leadership. We love the Newport
    church and the leaders .

    thank you for the work you are doing. i am trying to explore much about the present truth as presented by this site and other sister sites. I am discovering new truths i never new for 20 years in church. GOD BLESS YOU SO MUCH. LOVE YOU ALL. pray for me that i may be able to learn and teach others.

    Yours brother in faith,

    I would like to know what this statement is about?

    James White accomplished his assigned, truth forsaking, goal by denying the commencement of the perfect chain of prophetic truth, the 2520 year prophecy found in Leviticus 26.

  4. Brother Hansie Steyn says:

    Hallo,there are still so much that i do not know!How do i find the 2520 year Prophesy in Leviticus 26?Please tell me,because i do not see it!Maybe i am blind,or stupid,i don`t know!God asked me in 1996 if i would lead His People,but He only sent me to the SDA`s in October of 2007,after which i immediately got busy with God`s Final Call!Ever since that time,i am busy studying day and night!There are so many things that i learnt,but i want to know everything!I want to know when the 2nd coming of our Great God and King is,and what to expect next,and how to preach the Truth,the whole Truth,and nothing but the Truth,so help me God!And now i came across Brother Jeff Pippinger`s video`s,and already,even though it sounds sound,some people try to discredit him,and now i get confused as to what the real Truth is!Please help me,it is very urgent!

    • William Miller says:

      Apollos Hale

      The first of the prophetic periods, which are considered as main pillars in the calculations of Mr. Miller, is found in Leviticus xxvi. 18-28. {1843 ApH, TSAM 33.1}
      The objections urged against this are, 1. That it should not be considered a prophetic period at all. 2. If it he so considered,-as the seven times occur four times in the text,-it should be understood as a period of four times seven times. 3. Admitting it to express only one period of seven times, which, understood prophetically, would be 2520 years, why should the period begin B. C. 677? {1843 ApH, TSAM 33.2}
      1. Why consider the seven times of Leviticus a prophetic period? Answer. That is the first meaning we should think of attaching to the text. If the word times did not occur in other parts of the word of God, when chronological arrangements are spoken of, there would be some show of propriety in demanding the reasons for so understanding it in this case. But when we read of the seven times in the history of Nebuchadnezzar, Dan. iv., in which case only one signification has ever been supposed; and of the time, times and half a time, repeatedly spoken of in the prophecies of the Old and New Testaments; and of the times of the Gentiles, Luke xxi. 21; and of the times of the restitution of all things, Acts iii. 21; and of the dispensation of the fullness of times, Eph. i. 10; and of the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, which in his times he shall show, 1 Tim. vi. 15, etc., etc., the text in Lev. is at once recognized as one of a most numerous and important class. The text is a part of the last communication which “the Lord Spake unto Moses in Mount Sinai, (xxv. 1; xxvii. 34,) and was specially designed for the warning of the
      Children of Israel,” when they should “come into the land which God gave them”-a portion of truth which brought before them, in a most impressive manner, conditionally, their future history as a nation. {1843 ApH, TSAM 33.3}
      And this, if any doubt might exist, would confirm the idea that the text was intended to be understood chronologically. “And if ye will not for all this hearken unto me, then I will punish you seven times more for your sins.” “Then will I also walk contrary unto you, and will punish you yet seven times for your sins.” “And if ye will not for all this hearken unto me, but walk contrary unto me; then I will walk contrary unto you also in fury; and I, even I, will chastise you seven times for your sins.” Lev. xxvi. 18, 24, 27, 28. {1843 ApH, TSAM 34.1}
      “But does not the text mean to express that God would punish them in measure according to perfect justice?” That is a truth which it could hardly be necessary to assert. None could doubt that his administration would be according to perfect justice; and to punish them seven times might be as perfectly just as to punish them for any other period. {1843 ApH, TSAM 34.2}
      If any class of expositors should be called upon to give special reasons, they should do it who understand the text in any other sense than its obvious, chronological sense. Besides Mr. Miller, we know the Rev. Mr. Duffield, and Mr. Campbell, and others in our country, understand the text to contain a prophetic period, which they all understand figuratively to be 2520 years-as it must be understood in the nature of the case. Among the European writers, Mr. Philip (I think that is the name) understands and applies the period exactly as Mr. Miller does. I refer to him because he could have no knowledge of Mr. M. (See “Morning Watch”-a rare work in this country.) {1843 ApH, TSAM 34.3}
      2. “If the seven times be understood as a prophetic period, does not the text contain four of those periods?” I may be excused for inserting a quotation, which shows at once the carelessness and “ignorance” upon questions which every man may decide who can read his Bible, which are so characteristic of many who fill the most important stations in the modern church. It is from the pen of the editor of the Protestant Banner, published in Philadelphia-a most efficient antagonist of nominal popery. The writer had made a display of his powers on that side of the question of “Millerism” so honorable at the present time, in which he had shown from “Mr. Miller’s own terms,” as he called them, that the seven times could not run out till “A. D. 9103,” and then adds,- {1843 ApH, TSAM 34.4}
      • “It will be in vain for any advocates of Millerism to evade this conclusion, from the premises which they assume; they dare not tell us that the seven times here spoken of are merely a repetition of the same period, because it is emphatically staled after each separate enumeration of the different judgments,-which are impending,-that they shall be punished seven times more, if they do not hearken.” {1843 ApH, TSAM 35.1}
      Such a Protestant would not, of course, claim that kind of infallibility which might correct the written word; and if the reader will turn to the verses under consideration, it will be seen the word “more” occurs but twice at all; only once when the seven times are employed in stating their prospect of continued punishment, which is the first time the period is named, (v. 18,) and once when the measure of their punishment is compared with their sins-the only clear case of such comparison, (v. 21,) the second time the seven times are used. I am sorry that so many of our able opponents are; willing thus to expose such an utter want of every essential qualification for scriptural discussion, as to take such a position, and then “dare the advocates of Millerism” to take that view of a text which everyone, who is at all acquainted with the Bible, must see at once is the most consistent and obviously correct view of it,-”that the seven times here spoken of are merely a repetition of the same period,” with the exception, perhaps, of the second case referred to above. I have yet to see “the advocate of Millerism,” who is so ignorant of his Bible and so regardless of its contents, as to “dare” to make a statement like the above by the Rev. Mr. B–. {1843 ApH, TSAM 35.2}
      Surely, it can be no strange thing to suppose that God may have made “a repetition of the same” thing in the revelations he has given us of his designs and will, especially when the matter is one of such moment to the recipients of the revelation. God saw fit to make known to Pharaoh the seven years of famine by “a repetition” of dreams, which Joseph dared to tell the monarch were “one;” and, in explanation, adds-”And for that the dream was doubled unto Pharaoh twice, it is because the thing is established of God, and God will shortly bring it to pass.” Gen. xii. 32. In the predicted subjection of the Jews and other nations to the king of Babylon, we have “a repetition of the same period” four or five times by different prophets, (Isaiah xxiii. 15-17; Jer. xxv. 11, 12,) and I do not know that it has ever been considered an evidence of any particular form of courage to suppose this “repetition” to speak of only one period of “seventy years.” So invincible were the prejudices of Peter, and so important was it that he should understand the truth in the case, that there was “a repetition of the same” thing, three times, Acts. x. 9-16. John is remarkable for “a repetition of the same period:”-the forty-two months, or its equivalents, are named five times, Rev. xi. xii. xiii.; and the one thousand years are named six times certainly, chap. xx.; and yet I believe there are very few who suppose that the repetition, in each case, refers to more than one period. {1843 ApH, TSAM 36.1}
      The mystery of the seven times is, therefore, explained by the very natural and scriptural supposition of “a repetition of the same period.” {1843 ApH, TSAM 36.2}
      One important feature of this prophecy, however, appears to have been overlooked. The language implies, and the history of the Jews proves, that these predictions of national judgments were conditional; not
      merely in the sense that the conduct of the Jews would determine whether they should begin or not,-that is too plain to be mistaken, vs. 14-18; but after they had been inflicted in part, and the different forms of the threatened punishment had begun, the remainder of it might have been suspended or remitted; for after the first threatening of the punishment, it says, vs. 23, 24, “And IF ye will not be reformed by me by these things, but will walk contrary unto me; then will I also walk contrary unto you, and will punish you YET seven times for your sins,”-implying that, after the judgments had begun, if they would hearken and do his commandments, he would not punish them to the full; but if not, then he would punish them yet seven times,-the full punishment of the first threatening shall be poured out upon them. So the prophets understood the subject, and in accordance with it they addressed their countrymen, until they finally rebelled by rejecting their Lord, and the wrath came upon them to the uttermost. Jer. iii. 7-20; iv. 1, 2; vii. 5-7; xvii. 19-26; xxii. 1-4. {1843 ApH, TSAM 36.3}
      3. Why commence the seven times at the captivity of Manasseh, B. C. 677? {1843 ApH, TSAM 36.3}
      1. The prediction itself points to that event. The first form of their punishment stated in connection with the first mention of the period is,-”And I will break the pride of your power.” If their kingly form of civil government is here referred to, it was never “broken” until the captivity of Manasseh. Although it was the case, after the division of the Hebrews into the ten tribes and two tribes, that they were several times made tributary to foreigners, still one division remained independent while the other was subdued and tributary until his captivity; but at this period the ten tribes had lost their king, (2 Kings xvii. 1-18,) and as soon as Manasseh, the king of the remaining division, was carried into captivity, their “power,” as an independent people, was gone. Manasseh was the pride and the ruin of the Jews. {1843 ApH, TSAM 37.1}
      Again; the prediction specifies the particular sins on account of which this evil should befall them.{1843 ApH, TSAM 38.1}
      Some of these sins are as specifically charged upon Manasseh and the Jews as the direct cause of their calamity. Compare Lev. xxvi. 14, 18, 27, with 2 Kings xxi. 9-13; and Lev. xxvi. 1, 2, with 2 Kings xxi. 2-8; 2 Chron. xxxiii. 2-11. {1843 ApH, TSAM 38.2}
      2. Those texts which speak of the instruments of Providence in effecting this judgment, all point to his captivity as the time for the commencement of the period. Compare Isaiah x. 5, 6, with 2 Kings xxi. 10-14. 2 Chron xxxiii. 10, 11. Neh. ix. 32. {1843 ApH, TSAM 38.3}
      3. The sacred historians refer to Manasseh’s sins as the cause of their captivity and sufferings long after his captivity. 2 Kings xxiii. 26, 27; xxiv. 1-4; Jer. xv. 1-7. {1843 ApH, TSAM 38.4}
      4. Although Manasseh was restored to his throne, and there were a few other kings of the Jewish nation after him, they have never been an independent people “from the day of the kings of Assyria unto this day.” Neh. ix. 32. Nebuchadnezzar brought the kingdom, in its subjected form, to an end; when Babylon was conquered by Cyrus, the Jews passed under the power of the Medes and Persians; then under that of the Greeks; in the division of Greece, they were connected with Egypt; as a part of Egypt, were conquered by Syria; they prospered awhile under the Maccabees, and the protection of the Romans, who eventually “took away their place and nation.” Since the destruction of their city, they have been “wanderers among the nations,”-a hissing and a by-word,-pitying none, pitied by none. {1843 ApH, TSAM 38.5}
      5. The prophets, who lived long before the captivity of Manasseh, point to that event as the time of the passing away of the Jewish independence, by connecting it with other events. One of them gives the date. Hosea, more than a hundred years before, had said,-”And the pride of Israel (the ten tribes) doth testify to his face: therefore shall Israel and Ephraim (the principal tribe of the ten) fall in their iniquity; Judah (the other division) shall also fall with them.” Hosea v. 5. Isaiah, in the year 742 B. C., according to date in the margin, had said,-”And within three-score and five years shall Ephraim be broken that it be not a people.” vii. 8.
      From 742
      deduct 65
      leaves B. C. 677,-the only date ever given, I believe, for the captivity of Manasseh. {1843 ApH, TSAM 38.6}
      For an explanation of the quotations from Hosea and Isaiah, and for the most authentic history of the period before us, we add the following {1843 ApH, TSAM 39.1}

      Prideaux’s Con., vol. i., pp. 149-131. “In the eleventh year of Manasseh, B. C. 688, died Tirhakah, 4 king of Egypt, after he had reigned there eighteen years, who was the last of the Ethiopian kings that reigned in that country. {1843 ApH, TSAM 39.2}
      “The same year that this happened in Egypt, by the death of Tirhakah, the like happened in Babylon, by the death of Mesessimordacus. For, he leaving no son behind him to inherit the kingdom, an interregnum of anarchy and confusion followed there for eight years together, 5 of which Esarhaddon, king of Assyria, taking the advantage, seized Babylon, and, adding it to his former empire, thenceforth reigned over both for thirteen years; 6 he is, in the canon of Ptolemy, called Assar-Adinus. And in the scriptures he is spoken of as king of Babylon and Assyria jointly together. 7 {1843 ApH, TSAM 39.3}
      “In the 22nd year of Manasseh, B. C. 677, Esarhaddon, after he had now entered on the fourth year of his reign in Babylon, and fully settled his authority there, began to set his thoughts on the recovery of what had been lost to the empire of the Assyrians in Syria and Palestine, on the destruction of his father’s army in Judea, and on that doleful retreat which thereon he was forced to make from thence; and, being encouraged to this undertaking by the great augmentation of strength which he had acquired by adding Babylon and Chaldea to his former kingdom of Assyria, he prepared a great army, and marched into those parts, and again added them to the Assyrian empire. And then was accomplished the prophecy which was spoken by Isaiah, in the first year of Ahaz, against Samaria, vs. 8 that, within threescore and five years, Ephraim should be absolutely broken, so as to be from thenceforth no more a people. For this year, being exactly sixty-five years from the first of Ahaz, Esarhaddon, after he had settled all affairs in Syria, marched into the land of Israel, and there taking captive all those who were the remains of the former captivity, (excepting only some few, who escaped his hands and continued still in the land,) carried them away into Babylon and Assyria; and, to prevent the land from becoming desolate, he brought others from 9 Babylon, and Cutha, and from Avah, and Hamath, and Sepharvaim, to dwell in the cities of Samaria in their stead. And the ten tribes of Israel, which had separated from the house of David, were brought to a full and utter destruction, and never after recovered themselves again. {1843 ApH, TSAM 39.4}
      Esarhaddon, after he had thus possessed himself of the land of Israel, sent some of his princes, with parts of his army, into Judea, to reduce that country also under his subjection; who, having vanquished Manasseh in battle, 10 and taking him, hid in a thicket of thorns, brought him prisoner to Esarhaddon, who bound him in fetters and carried him to Babylon. {1843 ApH, TSAM 40.1}
      Archbishop Usher, after referring to the above facts in the history of Egypt and Babylon, stated by Prideaux, in reference to the points in question, says:- {1843 ApH, TSAM 41.1}
      “Year of the world 3327. Julian period 4037. Before Christ 677. This year also was fulfilled the prophecy of the prophet Isaiah, (chap. vii. 8,) in the beginning of the reign of Ahaz, “Within sixty and five years, Ephraim shall be broken in pieces so that it shall be no more a people.” For although the greatest part of them were carried away by Salmaneser 44 years before, and the kingdom utterly abolished, yet among them which were left there was some show of government. But now they left off to be any more a people by reason of the great multitude of foreigners which came to dwell there. New colonies or companies were sent out of Babel, Cuth, Hava, and Sepharvaim; and this was done by Esarhaddon, king of Assyria, as is easy to be understood, by the concession of the Cuthites, mentioned Ezra iv. 2, 10. {1843 ApH, TSAM 41.2}
      “At which time, also, as it should seem, and in the same expedition, whereby these things were done in the land of Israel, some of the chief commanders of the Assyrian army made an inroad into Judea, and then took Manasseh the king, as he lay hid in a thicket; after binding him with chains of brass, carried him away to Babylon. Jacobus Capellus hath noted in his Chron. that the Jews in Sedar Olam Rabba, and the Talmudists, cited by Rabbi Kimchi upon Ezra, chap. iv., do deliver, that Manasseh, 22 of his reign, was carried away captive into Babylon, and that he repented him of his sin thirty-three years before his death.”-[Usher's Annals of the World, p. 75. Lond., 1658. See also Newton on Prophecy, pp, 98, 99. Rollin, B. iii., chap. 2.] {1843 ApH, TSAM 41.3}
      From all the light we have upon the event to which this prophecy refers, and from which the seven times should commence, no other date could be named for the event-no other point for the starting-point, any more than we could fix upon any other date than 1776 for the date of American Independence. {1843 ApH, TSAM 41.4}
      Having thus disposed of the difficulties; connected with this first and most important detailed prediction of the history of the Jews, so far as it relates to the prophetic period it contains, we will close our remarks by showing that it must terminate in 1843; and by referring to those texts which assure us that the coming of Christ, and the end of all things, in their present state, also come at its termination. God has explained a “time” to be a period of 360 days, (Rev. xii. 6, 14.) In seven of those periods there are 2520 days, which, understood as years,-for they cannot be understood literally,-and commencing B. C. 677, end A. D. 1843. {1843 ApH, TSAM 41.5}
      The proofs that the end will come at the end of this period are found Dan. xii. 1-7. Luke xii. 24-27. See also remarks on the cleansing the sanctuary and last end of the indignation. {1843 ApH, TSAM 42.1}

  5. Dear Peggy
    Thanks for the site comments on the Daily which as you say is important.
    What do you make of the following testimony in the light of what you said about the close of probation?

    “The great issue so near at hand [enforcement of Sunday laws] will weed out those whom God has not appointed and He will have a pure, true, sanctified ministry prepared for the latter rain.–3SM 385 (1886). {LDE 179.2}
